What is HYROX?

HYROX is a global indoor fitness competition often called “The Sport of Fitness Racing” or “The World Series of Fitness Racing.” It combines running with functional strength exercises in a standardized format that’s the same at every event worldwide, making it accessible and comparable across locations.

The race consists of:

  • 8 x 1km runs (totalling 8km)
  • Interspersed with 8 functional workout stations, one after each run.

The stations, always in this order, are:

  1. 1000m SkiErg
  2. 50m Sled Push
  3. 50m Sled Pull
  4. 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
  5. 1000m Rowing
  6. 200m Farmers Carry
  7. 100m Sandbag Lunges
  8. Wall Balls (varying reps/targets)

Events take place indoors in large venues like exhibition halls, creating an energetic atmosphere with music, lights, and spectators cheering throughout.

HYROX is designed for everyone—from elite athletes to everyday gym-goers. Divisions include:

  • Individual — Open (standard weights) or Pro (heavier weights for competitive athletes)
  • Doubles — Pairs (same/mixed gender) sharing the workload
  • Relay — Teams of 4 splitting the race

Age groups and categories ensure broad participation. No qualification is needed for most events, and average finish times are around 90 minutes.

Founded in 2017 in Germany by Christian Toetzke (event organizer) and Moritz Fürste (Olympic hockey champion), HYROX has exploded in popularity. By 2025, it features over 100 events globally with hundreds of thousands of participants annually. Its appeal lies in the consistent format (train exactly for the race), inclusivity (low skill barrier compared to sports like CrossFit), and community vibe—often compared to a marathon for gym enthusiasts.
